Seriously, I thought that I really needed/wanted the break, but yanno, sometimes once you get what you want, you don't want it anymore.
It maybe has to do with that whole - grass is greener syndrome.
SO - I could give you the long version of what I survived over my holiday break - but I'll just cut right to the end because there was so much back and forth on twitter over this little trip.
I went out to my parents' cabin in Petersville, Alaska.
Petersville is 90 miles into nothingness.
No running water.
No electricity.
(okay, we finally put in a generator so we could charge up the battery for reading lights - each bunk has one - and so we can watch movies)
I got these hysterical emails from Kelley and Steph demanding to know WHY they were not contacted before my absence. Love ya girls ;-D
THIS is what I was doing:
THE CABIN
THE OUTHOUSE
Yes, the outhouse. I was given no end of grief on twitter over this one (insert eyeroll)
1. It doesn't smell in the winter
2. There's a PORCH to it.
3. After lighting a few candles, it's almost warmer than outside :D
Oh, yeah. And those little people are my kids. In the summer you can walk underneath the walkway without ducking.
The temp INSIDE the cabin.
Fahrenheit.
Better than the temps OUTSIDE the cabin.
We never go when it's this cold, but we spent too much money on fireworks to turn back ;-D
And you thought I was kidding.
We lit off fireworks until our fingers and toes were so cold they no longer functioned.
(BTW - this hill is almost vertical. Sometimes pics really make high-speed things look really lame)
My family doesn't know how to do anything in small groups - even in tight spaces. Everyone but me is in this pic. Cause, yanno, I was taking the pic.
Mike and I getting ready to take a ride. My blue snow pants just make me happy :D
Well, and so does Mike.
(I know, some of you just gagged a little)
Funny side note - my computer is on my back b/c the tiny lodge nearby has WIFI!!
YAY!!
Sunrise at the cabin.
Oh!
The fireworks are fun, but THIS is why we really come up.
To burn gas, and play in the DEEP snow.
And this is mid-afternoon up here. That's about as high as the sun gets this time of year.
Not great for driving, but fab for pics.
Tell me what y'all have been doing? Good news? Family fun? Anything interesting?
Friday I might post something about . . . you know . . . WRITING :D

Oh my gosh, that looks amazing. Alaska is one of those places I've always wanted to go, though I don't really have an explanation as to why. It just seems so cool. Ok, bad pun. But it really does seem so awesome!

I got cold just lookin' at those pics!
And I had fun reading your book on your break. So I missed you, but you kept me entertained while you were gone, so you are forgiven, lol.
Love these pics! Wow, that's a lot of snow! LOL. Had a quite Christmas with wonderful weather. Now things are back to normal and its rainy here (that's what I get for living in the rain forest, right ... haha ... I'm NOT complaining, its balmy here, like in the 40s (fahrenheit).
Missed you, but loved that you left something to entertain your people!
Happy 2012
I'm getting chills just looking at all that snow and sneezed when I saw that -26 degrees. EEK!
But it sounds like frozen fun so yeah, good holiday.
I did nothing. Wrote a little, had funsies with my Chipmunk...seven year old girls have way too much energy.
Hoping your new year started with a smile and continues that way.
If I had a million dollars I would buy a cabin! I love the woods and the solitude. I'm glad you are back and didn't lose any fingers to frostbite or fireworks--that would make typing hard.
I've never visited Alaska...but would love to someday. Beautiful photos!!!
Wow that looks amazing! I'm jealous. We spent the holiday installing a hardwood floor, finishing it, then putting in storage cabinets. Not that there's anything wrong with storage cabinets. Hooray organization.
I had to use an outhouse in Siberia one winter. Best experience ever. Well, not really, but you know...
Your pictures are beautiful. I especially love you having your computer on your back.
Happy New Year.
WOW! Just looking at that makes me wish I was there! Maybe not the cold cold weather so much, but all that solitude and peace in nature. Looks amazing!
Brrr! I got a chill just looking at the beautiful pics. At least that cabin looks cozy and warm... and the outhouse.
Glad you had a fun holiday!
I love your life. We can house swap sometime and you can come live right by the subway here. You'd get a kick out of it.
Oh my gosh - that looks so fun and so cold all at the same time! Alaska is beautiful - if they'd just warm it up a little, I could survive there! lol. Looks like you had a blast. LOVE the pics :)
I am so glad you took a break from this stuff to go do that stuff. It looks AMAZING!
Oh my gosh! That looks like fun. And I'm so happy the outhouse didn't smell! ;)
I've started writing again! YAY!!!
Wow, this sounds amazing, even if it was quite cold. I'd like a cabin like that. Welcome back :)
I enjoyed this post. I'm sure Alaska is a beautiful place... but isn't it a little cold? I like sunshine, a sandy beach along the gulf of Mexico and the sunsets are very lovely.
I'm just sayin'.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, I wish you a Happy New Year.
Those pics are amazing but I have to be honest and say I wouldn't want to be in the snow. I've got enough of it here in Alberta.
BTW- read your book and loved it! It was so fun reading a book by someone I *ahem* sort of know. :) I passed it on to my Mom to read because I know she'll love it to.
I'm glad your back and it looks really cold there. The cabin looks really nice though and snow mobiles are a ton of fun.
Question--How do you in 5 chapters make me fall for another one of your guys? How?? I want more Jay. and Sky...
JOLENE!! You're BACK! Woot! :D I love your pictures. It looks like you had an awesome break! :)
Very pretting to look at. VERY. Still... count me out. LOL. Too cold. Too much snow... Yes, I am a wuss and proud ;)
I...have never seen that much snow. Ever.
This is what I get for living in the south.
Seems like you had some super fun on the trip, minus the brrrrific weather.
